"You seem like such a likable person. Why didn't they like you? What would cause them to avoid you? It's not like you were an assassin when you were little."

"No... It's more like..."
Soren pondered over his words for a moment. Then, he nodded to himself and took a small exhale. "...I scared them away, if that's the way you want to look at it."

Mirage looked at him confusedly and asked, "How could anyone be afraid of you? You don't look at all intimidating."

Soren grimaced a little, recalling his early years in the orphanage. The boys belittling him while he didn't attempt to put up a fight. Acquaintances avoiding him after those incidents...
"You see, I was different. And there's a common saying that people always fear what's different. I was no exception to those frightened peers of mine. I almost burned one accidentally."

Mirage raised an eyebrow. "I know what it's like to be feared for being different, but mine is because I'm part shade. What do you mean by almost burned one of them? Is it part of your magical abilities?" She was fascinated by Soren and wanted to understand him. She just hoped she wouldn't bring up any really bad memories. Part of her mind was still aware of a threat, but she was no longer paying attention to it.

"Not that kind of burn, as a typical one you'd get from any mere campfire," Soren explained. "A burn from Shadows--Shadowmancy. It's the art of manipulating void and darkness to do your bidding."
He sighed for a moment, collecting his thoughts of the past incidents. "I didn't understand what it was back then. And it confounded me that such phenomenon was happening only around me, so it seemed. None of my peers ever experienced such out-of-the-blue paranormal activity unless they were around me. Being the lonely boy I was, it gave me time alone to read up on it."

"So have you developed this ability to use Shadowmancy?" Mirage asked. "As far as I know, it is one of the more rare magical abilities..." Mirage had only known maybe one or two people, if any, who had had that ability. "Has it been acting up around you when people come into contact with you, or did these occurrences only occur when you were little?"

"They've only ever occured when I was in my childhood years," Soren remarked. "Hasn't happened at all since I left the orphanage, for any unknown reason."
It seemed clear that Soren was not very adept at using his Shadowmancy powers--if that was even the case that he had them. He seemed very ordinary: a sidewalk artist trying to sell his work for a living, who knew a crazy blacksmith turned scientist.

"Interesting..." Mirage mumbled as she took a sip of her red wine. "I wounder why you haven't had any occurrences since you were in the orphanage. Maybe it only happens in certain situations. Do you remember ever feeling threatened by the other children when these occurrences happened?" she asked.

Soren thought about it for a moment. "Not that I can think of... I was never afraid of my peers. It was the just the fact that I was never quite in line with them. Since the incidents haven't happened since I left, do you think it's safe to assume that any strange Shadow abilities that I possess might just ben in a state of dormancy right now?"

"It's possible. Do you remember any prevailing emotions from the accidents? Powers can sometimes be connected and run by emotions. Have you tried using them since you were a child?" Mirage was intrigued.

Soren shook his head. "I wasn't even aware that I was capable of such power back then. And I don't even know how to use it now."

"It can take a long time to learn how to use a power. I learned mine at a very young age because it was how I was able to survive living in the palace. Usually you discover it or learn how to use your magical ability in a life threatening situation...." Mirage said.

"Oh..." Soren remarked. "Have you had many of those situations for yourself, Mirage?"

"When I was a little girl, my father was always trying to kill me. He was the former king of Forinasi. I've been living on the road for the rest of my life, and I've made a lot of enemies. I'm always watching my back, and learned to never trust anyone because that usually winds up with me nearly getting killed. I face death everyday," Mirage responded. "I learned how to use my powers quickly,"
