Soren relaxed a little more when he saw her smile again. He ordered something with little alcohol in it, and then looked towards the doorway, wondering if the presence might take a tangible form. It was unnerving to him that there might certainly be someone out to do them harm--someone within reach.

Mirage also watched the doorway. So far, none of the other patrons seemed to mean them any harm. Maybe I'm just over reacting, she thought. I have been under a lot of stress the past few days.... As much as Mirage hated small talk, she needed to do something that would take her mind off of her ever growing conundrum. "So, besides painting, what are your interests?" Mirage asked as she took a sip of red wine

Soren smiled at her, his attention drawn away from the doorway at her start of conversation. "All types of art, really, though painting is by far my favorite. I've not really had the chance to explore other hobbies I might've been interested in. What of you, Mirage?"

"I've sadly never had time for hobbies or interests beyond surviving," Mirage responded. "That is unless you count revenge as a hobby." Her eyes wandered back towards the door. "I used to read books as a way to escape the nightmares of my life, but now I don't have time to read."

"Surviving is your hobby?" Soren inquired. "That's an odd way to pass the time."
He grinned at her, his facial gesture letting her know that he was only kidding. "Books are nice... Or rather, they would be interesting if I knew how to read."

"You never learned how to read?" Mirage asked. "That's just depressing....." She had realized he was joking about surviving being an interesting hobby. "I wish I had time to read again; it would really help. Maybe I should try to start writing or something like that....." she mused as she took a sip of red wine. She was no longer paying attention to the door.

Neither was Soren.
"No, I was never taught how," he replied. "My orphanage days consisted mainly of tidying and dodging fights with my peers. Oh! And visiting Croissant in his blacksmith shop."

"Wait, that doctor used to be a blacksmith?" she asked. "How long were you in the orphanage?"

"I was abandoned there as a newborn, I believe," Soren recalled thoughtfully. "Back then, Dr. Croissant was the eccentric blacksmith rather than the crazy scientist he is now. But despite his eccentricities, people came to him for repairs and smithed products."
He smiled. "When I was old enough to wander around the town alone, I spent my days in the blacksmith shop talking to him. You see, he was very interested in art as well--actually the one who introduced me to painting. Then, he left to start his new life."

"Yes the doctor is an odd one," Mirage said. She had let down her guard a good bit, which was unusual, but she felt comfortable around Soren, which was also unusual for her. "I've never had a friend who didn't wind up betraying me, turning out to not be a friend, or who didn't attempt to kill me."

Soren was a little taken aback by such an abruptly direct remark, and he immediately thought Mirage was speaking of what he might be to her. Then, he thought about it, and he looked down at the table. "You're lucky to have even found friends, though..."

"I just wish I knew there was one person who I could trust as a friend and not get killed for having trusted that person," Mirage said. "Don't you have any friends?" she asked as Soren's response sunk in.

Soren smiled, a tone of sadness in his expression. "Not really... After staying in the orphanage for such a long time, I never really sought any friends out."

"I could never keep friends. Once people find out about my job or my past, they tend to run away, or betray me, or do something stupid. Once a person betrays me, it's pretty much hopeless that they'll ever get back on my good side. Why didn't you look for friends?" she asked. Mirage would have been lying if she said that Soren didn't intrigue her. She felt like she'd finally found someone who would understand her.

"Too many tries ending in failure," Soren said, keeping a good-natured tone in his voice. "No one in the orphanage liked me. If they started to, they quickly came to distance themselves from my presence--as if I were some stranger of the present."
He leaned back in his chair, smiling casually. "At such a young age, it was engraved in my mind that I was not meant to have friends."
