"At least I'm not the only one who hears voices. So should I be afraid if you suddenly burst into flames?" she asked.

"Oh no, I'm not in danger of burning just yet. Though you don't need to worry about me starting a forest fire. I keep my flames to myself." The Flames of Rebirth only burned a phoenix's body, nothing else. Enmire paused, distracted by what to him were sighs and soft whispers speaking in a language not even he understood. But somehow, he knew what the sounds were saying. The phoenix frowned at the sky. "The voices say it'll rain in the evening. Heavy rain, apparently, with the worst of it at midnight."

Mirage could have laughed at that. "Rain, well then, we best find a cave." She kept riding and then asked, "Do you have memories of your former lives?"

Enmire paused before answering, having decided that there was no harm in telling her. "Quite a handful of memories, yes. It used to be really confusing, too. With so many memories you sometimes forget which ones are yours."

Mirage looked over at him. "I can't imagine how hard that must be. It must be so hard knowing that you were once all these different people. Don't you ever get frustrated with never being able to live just one life with just those memories?"

Enmire smiled in agreement, but added, "The feeling of going through life again and again can be frustrating, but then you learn to appreciate the little differences each time. I rather find it more frustrating to remember the grudges of my past lives than to simply have their memories." Five lives back, though, he wouldn't have said the same thing. Irvine was more angry and frustrated than any of his incarnations had been.

"That must be strange, remembering those you left behind in previous lives. Have you ever tried to find any of them?" Mirage asked. She was fascinated by this Phoenix.

At that point Enmire stared at her. Her questions were becoming more intrusive. He of course understood it was mere curiosity, but he was surprised to see such open curiosity. In a few past lives, tales of his reincarnation were met with disbelief or even fear. Granted, Phoenixes were more commonly known in his current lifetime, but it was a refreshing change.
"Once." he answered, recalling how Sasa had several brothers he'd left behind. "They were old and dying by the time I found them, though. Memories of old lives do not come that early, and at times it takes a few years before I am born again. I find it easier to leave my loved ones from a past life behind."

"It must be strange, knowing that you are alive, but never the same person. Don't you ever get tired of not being able to lead just one life?" Mirage asked.

"I do, of course." he answered, a bit surprised by his own honesty. "But there's not much I can do about it, so I learn to look at my memories as valuable lessons." Lessons, he reminded himself grimly, that not everyone can be trusted. He'd died more than once because of trusting the wrong people.
Enmire turned to his map for a moment. The rain was definitely coming. Clouds were coming in from the horizon, and fast. "The cave shouldn't be far, now." he told Mirage.

"Alright," Mirage said as she tried to figure out why it felt as if he was beginning to withdraw from all conversation. Then she realized that it must be like how she often didn't trust people. Or perhaps she had made him think about something he would rather forget. She rode on in silence, hoping she hadn't offended him. She was starting to like him, and for once didn't totally feel like she wasn't being threatened.

Her short reply told him the conversation had ended, and he was aware it could be because of his mood. It wasn't his intention, really. Perhaps he was less cheerful and carefree than he wanted to be. Well, it can't be helped. Being murdered a couple of times could do that to people.
Enmire remained silent for a while. It would be best to keep the trust of his only traveling companion, but right then his priority was keeping his papers dry.
They came to the cave much sooner than expected. It was about time, too, because thunder clapped as soon as he caught sight of the cave's entrance. Enmire went ahead. When they were at the entrance he dismounted and led his horse inside. I suppose there wouldn't be enough time to gather firewood... Unfortunately he was no good at fire-based magic, but he could at least stop the wind from blowing into the cave.

Mirage dismounted and walked into the cave. She examined the cave to make sure that it was safe. Then she took her saddle bags in and began to make a screen out of her cloak to make a room for herself. There were sticks and leaves strewn about, so she used that to start a fire. No fire wood would be gathered, so she started heating rocks in the fire to cook food on and to keep the cave somewhat warm after the fire went out. "How did you know where to find this cave?" Mirage asked.

"Isn't it on the maps?" he replied while he rummaged for dinner in his pack. The truth was, he wasn't so sure himself if it was the maps that led him there. He only looked at them once. Perhaps one of his former selves had been there before? There were too many memories to sort through...

"I've traveled many places, but I would never be able to remember the exact location of a cave from memory or from looking at a map only once. Unless you've got a photographic memory, I've got no idea how you could remember it," Mirage said. She was impressed. She cooked some meet on a hot rock and ate it. Mirage sat and listened to the thunder. She loved the sound of the storm, seeing nature unleash it's power, a power that no one could ever control. She was still a little afraid of lightening, she'd always been afraid of lightening. It was uncontrollable, like her powers.
