I nodded, watching as he passed me for the door. I wanted to stop him, but I understood the futility of it. He wasn't even my target... but perhaps he knew where she had gone.
I walked slowly towards the doorway, standing just inside and the least suspicious manner I could find, which was clearly not very subtle. I could feel the many eyes of the tavern patrons on me, glancing from their meals with narrowed eyes. The tension in the room was thinly veiled by the general clatter fr eating and conversation. I could not remain long.
I drew a mirror form my pocket, edging it around the door frame as I leaned forward to hide it from the peering eyes around me. Perhaps I could follow him to Mirage.

Mirage saw Soren walk out of the tavern and head to the market. She walked towards him, trying to act casual, feeling like she was being watched. When she was close enough to him, she called out, "Soren!"

Soren started and looked over his shoulder. There he saw Mirage, amidst the thinning crowd of the coming dusk. He hurriedly walked over to her, sensing that there was some urgency in her tone. Even if there wasn't, there was still that feeling of discomfort brooding at the back of his mind.
"Mirage, where did you run off to?" he asked her.

"I got scared and ran to an alley," she said. "He was the one who was following us. I know he was, and I let my guard down," she continued. Best not freak him out with her observation of the man having the same colors as her dead brother's eyes. That could be just about any one... she thought. Come on, how many people have lavender eyes?

"Don't worry," Soren said with a grin. "I let my own guard down too."
There was something strange about the man they encountered--be it the man who was a threat or just a man who honestly was just passing through. And Soren wasn't too comfortable with the fact that they weren't too far away from the scene of the incident.
Taking a quick glance around, he lightly took Mirage's hand and led her in a direction. "Come. I don't believe it best to be so close to the tavern right now."

"I agree," Mirage mumbled as she wandered around the market. She found herself fingering a dagger. "I don't know why, but that person scared me."

((Sorry... Had no muse for a LONG time >>; ))
"I don't blame you, really," Soren remarked, guiding Mirage through the streets. "Not only did we encounter him in a place that houses questionable people, but he also made an abruptly questionable gesture, aye?"

"Well, I can't say if I remember if he did or not. It all happened rather quickly," Mirage replied. "I'm just glad he's gone, for now at least. I wonder who he was, and who he's working for."

Soren looked over his shoulder warily, wondering if the stranger had decided to follow them. He did not feel that Mirage was safe in the marketplace in the growing dark of night. "...Let's find you a place to stay."

Mirage looked over at Soren. He was a nice man. The first man she had met who was really nice, sincere, and she could trust in a really long time. It felt good. "Thanks..." she mumbled, as she realized she had been getting sidetracked. Don't get emotionally attached, the Shade said. He'll hurt you. The Elf part of her said, "Life without friends, love, or trust is no life at all. Being able to move on is important,"

Soren took her by the hand and nodded reassuringly at her, genuine concern in those deep, red eyes for the brief moment he looked at her. He proceeded to lead her through the streets, looking around for a safe place to stay.
"...Do you think we'll be safe at an inn?" he asked.

Mirage followed him. She tried not to flinch at the contact when he held her hand. It felt so warm in her cold hand. He was strong, and kind, not like her father. Still, she was not used to even this simple form of contact with a person, but it did not make her feel nervous. "I think so. Whoever he or she was, won't find us easily," she said.

"That sure is the hope in this darkening hour, wouldn't you say?" he remarked with a small smile.
He held her hand with a gentleman's touch--the kind that doesn't think of asking for something in return--leading her to a nearby inn and opening the door for her.

"Yes, I would," Mirage responded. She enjoyed the feel of her hand in his. She knew she could trust him, and that he would be the gentleman. It had been years since she had been able to trust anyone to not hurt her. But there were no warning bells going off in the back of her mind, and she felt safe. "Thank you," she said as Soren held the door for her. "At least I know one person who still believes in the laws of chivalry."

Soren felt his pale cheeks turn a slight shade of red, which he tried to hide behind a smile. He chuckled a bit. "I've seen what being rude does to people. It's like a bunch of rabid stray dogs acting tough and still being thrown out into the alley. And mind you, this stray pup wouldn't have the stubborn to bark if he tried."
He followed her up to the counter, where the innkeeper sat.
(Would you like to RP the innkeeper?)
